Another Edinburgh Community Cafe opens in Hill Street
Cafe on the Corner is a new addition to the New Town and is one of several Edinburgh Community Cafes.
The cafe is a new social enterprise and is part of the UK wide charity, Autism Initiatives, helping to support adults on the Autism Spectrum. Our aim is not only to raise awareness of Autism, but to help adults on the spectrum improve confidence and learn new skills within a work environment by creating occupational placements.
Today I paid the Café on the Corner a visit and received a very warm welcome from the staff.
The menu has been kept simple. There is a soup of the day and various toasted paninis and bagels to choose from. Incredibly, the toasted bacon, brie and cranberry panini that I plumped for was only £3.95 and came with salad and crisps. Hard to believe in such a central location.
The panini was chock-full of filling and was served with the glass of water I had requested.
For a sweet treat, I had the choice of two home-made cakes (today’s were mocha cake and lemon drizzle). Even though the freshly baked scones were screaming to be ordered with clotted cream, I chose a slice of the lemon drizzle (£1.95).
I perused the loose-leaf tea menu, supplied by The Wee Tea Company who really know a thing or two about tea. I opted for a pot of darjeeling which was served with an explanation of how long it should be brewed for the optimum taste.
Comfortable cafe
The tea worked perfectly with the large slab of lemon drizzle which was such good quality, it would have had Mary Berry smiling. They mean serious business with the cake here – it was deliciously moist and gone too soon.
The bill for my lunch was £8.05 – which is cracking value for the quality delivered. The exceptional friendly service makes this a place I’ll be returning to with friends in the near future.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7.30am – 3pm. Closed weekends.
The Cafe on the Corner sells a great selection of breakfast rolls from 7.30-11.00am and everything on the menu is available to take away.

Suitable for disabled? The cafe actually has three steps down from the door, but the rest is on one level, as it the bathroom.
