Look no further than Looking Glass Books in Edinburgh’s Quartermile

Now open in the Quartermile

A wonderful new independent bookshop and cafe has opened at Edinburgh’s Quartermile development. Looking Glass Books is tucked in the middle of the retail units, behind Peter’s Yard and close to the new Mariott Hotel.

We had a look around this morning and chatted with the owner Gillian Robertson about her new venture. Described as a ‘sanctuary for book lovers’, we love the vibe of the space, which sells lots of interesting books and also houses a cafe.

The knowledgeable staff will let you browse to your heart’s content, or make suggestions if you’re looking for something different to read. If a book you want is in print, then it can be ordered in for you.

Looking Glass Books is a classic bookshop when it comes to service and range of books, yet bright and modern in looks. There is a small range of gifts available as well, making this a one-stop shop for all your book, smalls gifts and cafe needs.

A wide selection of books

Events and book groups

Book groups are positively welcome here, with the sofa areas bookable for your group (no charge).

On Wednesday mornings from 10.30am, there is a story time session for 0-3 year olds. In-house story teller Caroline Harrison will be telling tales from classic books and new stories, using puppets and different activities.

For 4 – 7 year olds, the story time is on Sunday mornings at 10.30 am. Both events are free.

Cafe

There is an excellent cafe situated within the premises, selling a range of Eteaket teas and Carvetii coffee. The range of baked goods is supplied by other Edinburgh businesses, such as Manna House Bakery, Breadwinner, Patisserie Madeleine and Love Crumbs.

The cake display when we visited was really out of this world and good value for money.

Crisps and other snacks will be available in due course and other savoury options depending on demand.

The cafe seats around 35, with outdoor seating available in warmer weather.

Knowledgeable staff

We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful who want you to enjoy your book-shopping experience. Looking Glass Books is well worth seeking out in the Quartermile development.

Cafe area

With the cafe and shop is open until 9pm Monday – Thursday, it’s a fabulous way to spend your evening.

Books and cake? What’s not to love about that combination? We’ll be back for sure.
